Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently shed light on Alia Bhatt's emotional journey and remarkable transformation while working on the acclaimed film Gangubai Kathiawadi. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Bhansali shared candid insights into Alia's reaction when their earlier collaboration, Inshallah, was shelved, and how she embraced her role as the titular character in Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Emotional Turmoil Over "Inshallah"
Bhansali revealed that Alia faced a significant emotional upheaval when she learned that Inshallah would not move forward. "She cracked up, cried, raved, ranted, and locked herself in a room," he said, highlighting the deep impact the news had on her. After a week of reflection, Bhansali reached out to Alia, presenting her with a new opportunity: to play Gangubai, a pivotal character in his next project.
In a moment of vulnerability, Alia expressed her concerns to Bhansali, stating, “From Los Angeles, where I was supposed to be playing the character (in Inshallah), I have come to Kamathipura. How do I do it? I don’t know this character.”
Bhansali reassured her, saying, “Do you trust me? I can tap into that strong woman in you because I can see it in your eyes.” His faith in her abilities helped Alia transition into the demanding role.
A Transformative Experience
Alia Bhatt not only accepted the challenge but also fully immersed herself in the character of Gangubai, the brothel madam in Mumbai's Kamathipura. Bhansali praised her commitment, stating, “She just flew into the role.” He noted that Alia initially doubted her capacity to portray such a complex character, saying, “I didn’t know I could play the brothel madam. I didn’t know I had a lower pitch; I didn’t know I had to stand there and do this.” However, as she began to explore the depths of Gangubai’s persona, Alia discovered a newfound enjoyment in the role.
Bhansali humorously mentioned that even today, Alia occasionally speaks like Gangubai, indicating how deeply the character has become ingrained in her. “It’s so much a part of it,” he remarked, celebrating her ability to embody the character so fully.
